Prof Riaan Mulder qualified as a dentist in 2007 and holds a masters degree in Restorative Dentistry and a PhD in Paediatric Dentistry. His PhD in Paediatric Dentistry focused on the development and improvement of various glass ionomers to increase the activity of these biomaterials for restorative purposes on tooth structure. He is one of two permanent staff members in the UWC dental faculty that is rated for his research by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa. He obtained his Associate Professor title in 2022 and is the youngest in the UWC dental faculty to achieve this. Prof Mulder has been a national and international 3M (Solventum) key opinion leader since 2015-2025 in Dental Materials and 2026 onwards for GC Corporation. He regularly lectures to national and international dental fraternities. Research interests include Dental Materials, Ethics, and Medical Device Invention.
